The Main Railway Station

The Main Railway Station, built in the Neoclassical style, was established as part of the Warsaw and Vienna railway project. The railway track section from Ząbkowice to Sosnowiec was built by the Warsaw-Vienna Railroad Company. The Company commissioned the Italian architect Enrico Marconi, who was also an author of the Maczki railway station project, to design the Main Railway Station building. The design, with only slight adaptations, was modeled on the previously implemented project of the Vienna Railway Station building situated in Warsaw.

The construction of the Main Railway Station in Sosnowiec has initiated development of the city. The facade of the building has survived unchanged till today. The present railway station concourse has been extended. The north-east part of the facility functioning in the 60s as a gymnasium was demolished in the 70s of the 20th century. The place is currently occupied by the Polish State Railways' data center building. This way the historical layout of the station and the railway church located next to it, has been disturbed.

Classicistic forms are the dominant elements in the railway station appearance.

The Main Railway Station was also included in the project of the last reconstruction of the city centre, an investment planned for the years 1997-2002. The first stage of the Sosnowiec centre reconstruction consisted in the modernization of the railway station, adapting at the same time rooms in the left wing of the building for the needs of the passengers. The second stage consisted in the construction under the main railway station concourse of a shopping arcade linking the Kiliński housing estate with the Modrzejowska Street zone. At the same time the area around the station and the railway church has been neatly arranged.

As one can see, during the whole investment process the historical monuments were treated with great respect, which is why the Main Railway Station in Sosnowiec is a true showcase of the city.
